Renck's Landscaping and Garden Center just restocked its inventory of Ohio glaciated boulders. Collected locally, these guys are beautiful. You can own your own piece of Ohio geological history.

In places covered by ice sheets during Ice Ages, such as northern North America,  glacial erratics (boulders)  are common. Erratics are boulders picked up by the ice sheet during its advance, and deposited during its retreat. They are called "erratic" because they typically are of a different rock type than the bedrock on which they are deposite

Renck's Landscape and Garden Center efforts to promote sustainable practices has recently been recognized by the Hamilton County Solid Waste Management District. Renck's Garden Center helped promote the compost bin sale, which was a large success for Hamilton County and composters alike.  Renck's commited stance on reducing, reusing, and recycling also was acknowledged by leaders at the HCSWMD. If you have any questions about how to start composting stop into the garden center and ask for Dennis.

The below link has some more of the details related to the sucess of the Compost Bin Sale.

What would Dennis Plant in his garden?

Heres a valid question. What would Dennis Renck, a trained Horticulturalist and plant lover,  plant in his garden ?

Well, yesterday, after much thought and carefull planning and observation the soil was broken into and trees, shrubs, and perennials went into the ground. I would like to share the details.

Plant #1. The first in the ground was the one I was most sure about. I had given it a lot of thought and  I went with a Paper Bark Maple. This tree was planted on the fringe of my perennial/art garden about 20' feet away from my house. With maturity reaching about 20-25' feet in height, and a width of 15'  this will prove strategic long term, as it will shade my home in the hot summer months and allow the warming sun into my south facing windows in the winter. Looking forward to growing a relationship with this tree to enjoy its AMAZING autumn display of oranges, reds, yellows, and browns.

Ensuring a Successful Produce Garden

Don't let starting a produce garden be intimidating. There are a few simple to follow steps that can drastically increase your rates of success.

-Choose a location in full sun. This means at least 6 hours of direct sunlight in summer.

-Choose a site with soil that is well drained. Roots have to breathe, and cannot do so if water sits in the soil for too long

Best Mulch around

Its mulching season, and at Renck's Garden Center we are fully stocked and ready to help with your mulching project.

Renck's Garden Center offers a wide variety of bulk and bagged mulches. Our most popular mulch products are our Organic Hardwood lines. We stock 2 grades of organic, naturally aged, all bark hardwood mulch in bulk. These mulches are served up in heaping bobcat scoops. Coverage per scoop is rated at 125 square feet applied at 2.5" depth. Once you see the size of the scoops you will realize its quite a deal to buy in bulk. Sometimes called "black gold' our AA grade is triple processed and black as a naturally aged mulch can be. It breaks down to provide essential organic humus to landscape beds. The A grade hardwood is double processed to ensure uniform consistency, and tends to be a bit coarser, better for areas that receive a bit more wind.

Also available in bulk is Cypress, Color Enhanced Black, and Color Enhanced Red Mulches. The Color Enhanced Black mulch is gaining in popularity. It is also 100% all bark hardwood, so never any pallets or green waste in the Dyed Black.

Valuing the Earth

Earth seems to get more of a placid affection rather than fascination and awe it deserves. It contains just the right amount of space dust, minerals, gases, and sunshine to sustain all the diversity and lushness of life. Diligently supporting enumerable species of plants and animals, (including ourselves) Earth possess a sophisticated planetary intelligence. Humans enormous dependence on Earth is undeniable and obvious.

This relationship hasn't always been recognized or respected. Around the turn of the 20th century the resources of Earths ecology seemed inexhaustible, or at least always reasonably renewable. By and large this attitude was unchallenged and unchecked until the last 40 years. Then, the convergence of color photography and space exploration provided radical images of our home. The seeds of the environmental movement were planted.

If a simple photo could cause such a stir what can , ultra realistic 3D do ?

Hundreds of millions, across the globe were captivated by the film, Avatar. Metaphorical loaded, Avatar could evoke a new collective ecological intuition. That is if we as a society favor the message over the medium. Viewed through plastic glasses, movies escapist qualities are enlarged. Enabling ourselves to drift further away from the message of the Na'vi; living with a greater understanding and higher integration of our natural surroundings. Choose the message, its up to every individual.
